DAB Electronica concludes Newsroom Project for the National Station (PBS)
(9/5/2008)
DAB Electronica has successfully concluded the installation of a News Room Computer System for the National Station (PBS).
DAB Electronica has been awarded the contract for a modern, state of the art, newsroom editing system after being evaluated as the best technological/price solution amongst the tenderers.
The Solution provided by DAB Electronica Co. Ltd together with AVID Technology, a leader in this field, is completely tapeless and extremely flexible, allowing last minute changes in the news rundown as well as changes or addition of new stories whilst the show is running.
The solution is based around a completely collaborative workflow and has given journalists the ability to edit the stories themselves, including voice overs, with the option of refining the edit, if need by, by a craft editor. Sending the stories for playout is as easy as clicking a button with the mouse; the stories are transferred in the background, to be ready for showtime.
The solution also caters for automatic Ingest recordings of external feeds at specific times, so the journalists don't have to worry about recording at all. All the material they need, is found on the central storage, the highly acclaimed AVID Unity, robust and fully redundant for peace of mind of all the media assets.
Searching, archiving, setting access controls, deletion rights, etc.. are easy with AVID Interplay, the most advanced media asset managemet available, used extensively by big broadcasters throughout the whole world.
PBS staff were extensively trained by DAB Electronica's / AVID's engineers and workflow specialists on both the complete system operation, technical support and maintenance. On-Air support was provided for D-day, i.e. when PBS switched off their old system to go on air with the new NRCS solution, giving their viewers a new experience of higher quality TV News broadcast. We were there to support PBS staff with their teething problems for the rest of the week, which we must say, were not much, because PBS journalists, editors and engineers, showed excellent dedication and professionality.
The solution provided by DAB Electronica Co. Ltd has offered huge benefits to PBS' newsroom:
- Increase in productivity due to a collaborative workflow environment.
- Adding footage to the story script is extremely easy with AVID Instinct, a software created purposely for journalists.
- Re-utilizatio of frequently recycled footage is much easier with media constantly Online, thus maximising efficiency. No more need to ingest again and again from tape archives which is both time consuming and results in loss of picture quality.
- Automatic linking of the script to the teleprompter - no need for file transfers, reloading, etc... Journalist just write the script and it is automatically there, ready for the newscaster to read!
- Facility to store only the required segments of footage by subclipping using Interplay Assist software.
- Editing can commence just 30 seconds after the material is being ingested; unvaluable when fighting against time for that last minute story!
DAB Electronica Co. Ltd. wishes to thank PBS management and staff for their trust in our company to deliver such an important project for the National Station and for the collaboration shown throughout the various stages of implementation.
